Sicily has several islands and archipelagos. One of them is the volcanic Lipari, also known as the Eoli Islands, in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Thanks to its almost perfect climate and numerous active volcanoes, it has become known and popular tourist destination. From Sicily and Italy you can easily reach by ferry or by boat these small tiny jewels that belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The islands were named after Aeolus, the God of Winds. Lipari, Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi, Stromboli, Panarea and Vulcano await the visitors here with beautiful landscapes, volcanoes, castles, thermal baths and, of course, more beautiful beaches. Due to its magnificent beaches, the Eoli Islands take summer crowds.
37 km2 area is the largest island in the group. Historically, it is also the most interesting, but it is visited by tourists mainly because of its fascinating shores. Formerly it was the center of obsidian, volcanic glass trading, today the pumice extract is significant in its area.
Its center is Lipari, a charming small town that boasts a Norman temple and an archaeological museum. In its center, the Castle Hill, where ancient Acropolis once stood. The medieval castle was built in the 13th century and the fortress of the 16th century. Its population of about 10,000 is doubling in the May to September season.
The small town with the same name as the island is the administrative center of the Aeolian islands and part of the province of Sicily, Messina, Italy. The total population is around 8500. From an administrative point of view, all members of the archipelago (Vulcano, Panarea, Stromboli, Filicudi and Alicudi) except Salina belong to Lipari, so the total population of Lipari reaches 11,000.
